Once you establish eye contact, maintain or hold it for 4-5 seconds them slowly glance to the side and then go back to establishing it. Remember to look side to side. Looking down can give the appearance that you are lacking confidence. While you are listening and maintaining eye contact, you should smile, open your face and look interested.
Have Inviting Body Language :
Inviting body language means positioning yourself in a way that makes it inviting and easier for people to come talk you. To show that you are listening and do care what they are saying, here are some engaging body language cues you can try-
- Raising your eyebrows every once in awhile.
- Move slightly closer toward the person speaking to you.
- Smiling and laughing when it is appropriate.
- Titling your head when hearing new or interesting information.
- Nodding you head if you agree or understand what someone is saying.
Keeps An Open Mind :
Listening without judging the other person or mentally criticizing the things the person telling you? Listen without jumping to conclusions.
Listen With The Intent To Learn :
“Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood’’ You can learn a lot from listening to others. If you go into every interaction with curiosity and genuine interest in others, this will come across in the way your presence feels to the other person.
Wait For The Speaker To Pause To Ask Clarification :
When you don’t understand something, yes of course you should ask the speaker to explain it to you. But rather than interrupt in between, wait until the speaker pauses. you can use words like “pardon please…”
Ask Open Questions :
Closed questions are one that can be answered with a simple “yes” or “no”, while open questions are designed to promote longer, more thoughtful responses.
Asking closed questions can seem like you just want to get specific information from the other person. Or, that you only have limited time for them. On the other hand, open questions show your desires to engage in a proper discussion and your interest in getting into the speaker’s mindset.
Try To Put Your Leg Into Speaker’s Shoes :
Empathy is the heart & soul of good listening. Try to feel yourself, what the speaker is feeling at that time at that moment. Convey the same feeling through facial expression and words, then your effectiveness as a listener is assured. You don’t need to agree with all what they say, but by empathizing with them, you understand their point of view.
